non The Brevard College Weekly Vol. I Brevard College, Brevard, North Carolina, January 31, 1936. No. 14 Mr. Rrammell Resigns Mr. Daniel S. Trammell, B. Mus., last week resigned as head of the music department here to take up his duties as head of the piano department at Winthrop College. Mr. Trammell was appointed head of the music department upon the opening of Brevard College in 1934. Prior to his work here he held numer ous positions in various colleges and universities throughout the country. He received the degree of Bachelor of Music from Chase Conservatory of Music. Landscaping is one of Mr. Trammell’s hobbies; he has planned several gar dens in near-by places. He is well trained in stage setting and helped with the aUering of the stage in the auditorium' here. He is interisted in all the fine arts. The good wishes of the faculty and the students go with him as he takes up his new work. Quarter Will End March 20 Recently at a meeting of the faculty it was decided that the second quarter would end on Friday, March 20, at noon. The examinations for the sec ond quarter will be held during the week of March 15, probably from Tues day through Friday. The college will be in recess from March 20 at noon un til] Tuesday morning, March 24, at eight-thirty o’clock. This will consti tute the spring holidays. The faculty also set the date for commencement, which will be June 10. Physican: “Your room mate must be absolutely quiet. Here is some sleep ing draught.” Vivian Moore: ‘ ‘When do I give it to her?” Physican: “You don’t, you take it yourself.” News in Brief Saturday night the college orchestra will present a program. They will have several guest stars, among whom will be “Jocko” Brooks, the leader of last year’s orchestra. A program of great variety and interest is promised. Last Sunday night Mr. and Mrs. Col- trane had fourteen students in their home for a fireside consideration of religious topics. The discussion was led by Mr. Coltrane, and it proved most successful. He plans future oc casions of this nature. 0 Eight prospective husbands are pro gressing well in the Foods and Nutri tion class for boys. They are study ing body needs for various kinds of foods, and they will soon start prepar ing some of these. Ninety-six lockei’S have been install ed in the biology room. This gives every student studying biology a lock er in which he can keep his equipment for laboratory work. Bill Patton was elected treasurer of the freshman class at their regular meeting last week. The vacancy oc curred when Ed Powell resigned. At a recent meeting of the faculty it was decided that Brevard will not offer preparatory work during the summer quarter as was done last year. James Crouse was recently reelect ed as head of the mid-week prayer service committee at Taylor Hall. He is assisted by Frank Heffner, A. G. Southerland, Thomas Angel, and Mitchell Faulkner. Mr. Carlisle announced Wednesday that board bills for February will be due between the first and sixth. Mary McLarty: “After I’d sung my encore, I heard a gentleman from the back call out, ‘fine! fine!’ ” Martha Walker: “Goodness! And did you have to pay it?” Football Players Honored Monday morning at the assembly period the chapel exercises were turn ed over to coach James. The main features of this program were the a- warding of athletic letters and talks by Professor Williams and President Coltrane. Mr. Williams, in his talk, reviewed the records set by Brevard athletic teams since the opening of the school in the fall of 1934. He also took that oppor tunity of recognizing the members of last year’s basketball and baseball teams. The eligibility requirements that Brevard College has been living up to in the past and will continue to observe in the future were next discussed by our president. He stated that the rules the Southern Association is at the present trying to pass are those by which we have always been abiding. President Coltrane was awarded a block “B” by Coach James, making him an honorary member of the mon ogram club. The following men received the block “B” for their football service during the fall of 1935: Gareth Thomp son, Walter Clayton, Ed Clayton, Ellis Frady, Everatt Huggins, Bill Davis, Bud Gaston, Bill Edwards, C. W. Har mon, Charles Grey, John Odom, Bill Ferguson, Leroy Lail, Phillip Brooks, Clarence Henry, David Ashworth, Earnest Pi-uett, and Dan Williams, manager. D. W. Harrison and William Scott, assistant managers, and Ferrell Young cheer leader recived the old English “B.” Miss Smith: “Got away has she? Did you guard all exits?” Lou Bell Boyd (who was acting as proctor): “Yes, but we think she must have left by one of the en trances.” Katherine Brown: “I am always ill the night before a journey.” Mary Ross: “Then why don’t you go a day earlier?”
